Humanistic, Integrative Counselling, Coaching and Therapy Practice
Working Together
My approach focuses on you as a unique individual and your own perspective.
To help understand your needs, and address them, I hope to build a relationship around trust, confidentiality, respect, and understanding. A variety of useful techniques based around talking therapies could include creative work, discussion of dreams, relaxation, mindfulness and grounding, cognitive, emotionally focused and evidence-based approaches.
I believe in understanding the whole person, integrating a wealth of experience and expertise in physical health, psychiatry, and work with young people. I am bound by the BACP ethical framework and committed to ethical practice in every aspect of the work I do. I receive regular professional supervision by qualified supervisors, and undertake training and continuing professional improvement regularly.
Peter Wirt
(MA Counselling, PCET-PGCE, BA (hons) PE/PSY, MBACP)
I am a fully qualified counsellor, having completed a Masters Degree programme in Counselling in the United Kingdom, at York St John University. I maintain full membership of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and am currently in the process of converting this into a British Columbia Association of Clinical Counselling accreditation (BCACC). I have over 5 years of experience in one-to-one client work, including three years running a private practice. Following my accreditation, I spent three years teaching part time on the undergraduate Counselling, Coaching and Mentoring degree and the Foundation Degree in Mental Health at York St Johns.
I recently took early retirement from teaching post-secondary Physical Education and Sport Science after 17 years as a head of programme, and I am a fully qualified Teacher and hold an undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Psychology (Combined Honours) (PCET-PGCE). Formerly, I worked with York Mental Health NHS trust as an assertive outreach worker in the community, and on the inpatient wards in York. I have also been a senior Youth and Community worker with City of York Council Youth Services. I have been lucky to have experience as a player and manager for Team GB Inline Hockey, and since retirement, keep an interest in the commentary box. I have a keen commitment to supporting and promoting well being, open communication and good mental and physical health. I have developed my professional therapy practice along humanistic and integrative approaches, combined with experience in Cognitive Behavioural, Somatic and Psychiatric treatments as part of a whole person perspective in dealing with people’s issues in an individual, accepting and non-judgemental framework. I believe that through a good working relationship, we can help understand your story and support building the next chapter of your journey the way you want it to be.
I offer a free initial consultation where you can ask questions, clarify anything about how I work, and agree on a way of working together to help you address your issues or concerns. Typically, clients arrange for weekly sessions for a full hour, over a period of time which is flexible, but this can be negotiated between us as appropriate.
